Washington, D.C., January 28, 2026 – Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington received a $20,000 grant from Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program to support our efforts in connecting our clients to benefits and access food.

Thanks to the timely and generous grant, Catholic Charities DC will enhance SNAP enrollment and outreach efforts in the District of Columbia by offering prescreening eligibility activities and application assistance. This will help households access essential food assistance benefits. Additionally, recertification assistance for clients who have previously enrolled in the program and need further support will be provided.

“This generous grant will help us strengthen our efforts to counter food insecurity in our community,” said CEO and president Jim Malloy. “By supporting our neighbors in accessing food programs, Catholic Charities DC is making sure they have meals on their tables every day.”

Catholic Charities DC will also perform community outreach and engagement to increase SNAP participation through education and the promotion of SNAP benefits to individuals and households.

Nourishing Neighbors, a charitable initiative of the Safeway Foundation, seeks to ensure at-risk children, adults, seniors, and families have access to the food they need to thrive. Through this program, more than 150 local food banks and community organizations, including Catholic Charities DC, are receiving Nourishing Neighbors grants to support outreach and enrollment in nutrition programs. In addition, Safeway stores offer online access and educational resources to further support food security.
