Conway Education Center Beam Signing Ceremony

April 23, 2025
Home>Our Stories>Photo Gallery > Conway Education Center Beam Signing Ceremony

Steel beams decorated with signatures, handprints and thumbprints representing the Catholic Charities community were lifted into place in the Conway Education Center at a “beam signing” ceremony on April 23, 2025. Hosted by general contractor Coakley & Williams Construction, the event allowed members of the Catholic Charities staff and Board of Directors to put their signature on the new building going up in northeast D.C. Children and young adults  from our Child Development Center and Kennedy School added handprints and thumbprints. For more about the celebration that marked a new phase of construction, check out this article. Photos by Chris Williams.

Catholic Charities President and CEO Jim Malloy praised the staff of Coakley & Williams Construction for their enthusiasm for the project, and he thanked the Bedford Falls Foundation for a generous donation that has helped the education center become a reality.
Barbara Lankster, a longtime employee at the Child Development Center, said the education center “will not just be a building but a beacon in the community” signifying Catholic Charities’ values in creating high-quality care and education.
Kennedy School students put on vests and hard hats to watch the signed beams be put into place.
After signatures were added, the beams were hoisted into place by a crane.
Senior Project Manager Emily Fredette of Coakley & Williams Construction shared updates on the project and explained what was done with the beams.
