More than 1,100 guests attended the 40th anniversary Catholic Charities Gala on April 5, 2025.
Gala co-chairs Patricia and Nicholas DeNovio, Anne and Bob Easby-Smith, and Rose and Mark Lee chaired the event that raised more than $3.5 million. A reception, program, dinner and entertainment were followed by an “after party” for young adults, which gave them an opportunity to also celebrate the accomplishments of the Catholic Charities community.

Cardinal Robert McElroy (center) attended his first Catholic Charities DC Gala as the archbishop of Washington. He greeted co-chairs and their families as the event began.
Board Chair David DiLuigi told the 1,100 guests: “The good work of the Catholic Charities staff touched the lives of 158,000 people last year, all while ensuring their dignity and reinforcing the message that they are as important as anyone else.”
“By being with us this evening, you recognize the work that strengthens our community by serving people who are most in need.” — Gala Co-chair Dr. Mark Lee
“When I think of Catholic Charities, I think of people helping people,” said Gala Co-chair Bob Easby-Smith. “Each of the 158,000 people helped last year has a story, and those stories include the hope that comes from the compassionate care of Catholic Charities’ employees, volunteers and donors. This is the reason we are here tonight — to add our voices to the chorus, ‘We care.’”
Co-chair Anne Easby-Smith thanked the many enthusiastic volunteers who have chaired the Galas over the last 40 years. The events have supported the work of Catholic Charities by raising a total of $49 million.
“We remain committed to the service of others as guided by the richness of Catholic Social Teaching,” President and CEO Jim Malloy said. “As our predecessors have for almost a century, we carry on with passion and conviction.”
Cardinal Robert McElroy called the story of the Good Samaritan “the call of Christ to every one of us, and that is why we are here tonight.”
Our Health Care Network has just celebrated its 40th anniversary. Dr. Sean Dwyer, a cardiologist, volunteered with the network for all of its 40 years and is now a volunteer with Catholic Charities’ Volunteer Medical Clinic.
In leading a “Fund the Mission,” Msgr. John Enzler said, “When you say yes to this, you’re saying, ‘I want to have compassion for some people who otherwise don’t have that gift.'”
Co-chair families joined David DiLuigi on stage as he announced the result of the “Fund the Mission,” which raised more than $200,000.
Co-chair Nicholas DeNovio thanked Gala sponsors and donors, noting that their contributions will help ensure the sustainability of Catholic Charities. He ended the program with an introduction about how today’s young people will take Catholic Charities into the next decades.
“My siblings and I encourage our generation — no matter your interests — to get involved with Catholic Charities.” — Christina DeNovio, Gala co-chair and former Catholic Charities intern and volunteer
