Seven Extraordinary Volunteers Recognized

Volunteers were honored for their extraordinary commitment and contribution to the work of Catholic Charities at the annual Caritas! reception on April 10, 2025, at the Saint Pope John Paul II National Shrine. The seven who were honored represent the more than 3,300 people who volunteered with the agency last year.

President and CEO Jim Malloy welcomed guests and shared the positive impact that volunteers have on Catholic Charities and the people it serves.
Dr. Melanie Buttross, who was unable to attend the reception, received the Msgr. Geno Baroni Award for her pro bono work with the Health Care Network.
Sister Diane Roche, Father John O’Connor Award for Empowerment, for her work with the Refugee Services Center.
Andy Solberg, nominee for Catholic Charities USA Volunteer of the Year, for his work as a mentor with the Welcome Home Reentry Program-DC.
John Salmon, Volunteer of the Year for Adult & Children Clinical Services, for his work with tax assistance for clients of the Financial Stability Network.
Richard Rousseau, Developmental Disabilities Services Volunteer of the Year, for his work improving the library at the Kennedy School and instilling the love of reading and learning in students.
Thomas Hoopengardner, Housing and Homeless Services Volunteer of the Year, for his role as a mentor with the Welcome Home Reentry Program-Montgomery County.
Monica Meyers, Newcomer Network Volunteer of the Year, for her work as a pro bono attorney with Immigration Legal Services.
Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, a Catholic Charities Board member, said, “Catholic Charities is all about the people we serve.” He thanked volunteers for “giving of your time and your talents, of yourself to Catholic Charities … for sharing your life with those people in need.”
