Truancy and absenteeism is a major obstacle for the success many DC students. Show Up Stand Out works with families to find out what they need to make sure their kids attend school regularly—a critical first step for a good education and a bright future.
Show Up, Stand Out provides the District of Columbia Public and Charter elementary and middle schools (K-8) with individualized case management and family support. Our goal is to reduce the rate of unexcused absences within DC Public and Charter Schools and help parents get their children to school every day. In addition to case management and family support provided by Community Advocates, middle school students are provided with a Youth Coordinator that engages and works closely with each truant student involved in the program to determine what school based activities such as groups, mentoring, and sports activities would best serve to reconnect them to their academics and reduce absenteeism.
Intake: Once a student has been referred by their school attendance counselor the child’s parent will be contacted by our Community Advocate or Youth Coordinator to discuss the program further and schedule a day and time to complete intake. Intake can be completed in the parent’s home, school, office or anywhere the parent feels comfortable meeting.
Qualifications: This program is free. To qualify for our program a student must have 5-9 unexcused absences and attend one of the following schools:
