New York Avenue Men's Emergency Shelter

Do you need shelter tonight? New York Avenue Emergency Shelter is an emergency shelter for men over the age of 18. The program offers a hot meal, a shower, a place to stay off of the streets, access to a case manager and a work program to give clients experience in the work environment. We also run a clothing store for free clothing to clients. Shuttle service is offered to several locations in downtown DC. Intake begins at 7 pm each night and the shelter closes at 7 am the next morning.

This shelter serves as a hypothermia shelter during the winter months between October and March when temperatures drop to deadly lows.

The shelter opens at 7 pm each night. We offer on-site showers, providing soap, towels, some lotion and a change of clothes. A hot dinner is served, as well as a morning snack. Beds are available with sheets on a first come, first serve basis.

Unity Health Care operates an on-site medical clinic Monday - Friday 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

We also offer an Employment Program for residents who are employed. Each works with a case manager to monitor savings in an effort to exit out of the shelter system and into permanent housing. A Work Detail Program within the shelter gives men the opportunity to spend part of the day working in the shelter and part working with a case manager to secure employment. Both programs offer participants 24-hour access to the facility.

Monthly Town Hall Meetings and Client Council Meetings (every second Tuesday) are just two ways that residents can be involved in the shelter and offer feedback.

Get involved in our work

Donate: We need your support to change lives -- the shelter runs on a very tight budget. Consider helping us serve more people with a gift. Make a donation directly to New York Avenue Men's Emergency Shelter.

Volunteer: Whether you can cook a meal or lead a session on a specific topic, there's an opportunity for you and your group to make a difference. Call (202) 832-2359 to find out how you get involved.

Give clothing: At New York Avenue, we run a clothing "store" to help prepare our clients for a job interview. New or gently used clothing can make a huge difference in providing confidence, as well as warmth and comfort.
