Each winter, Catholic Charities collects and distributes over 1,000 winter coats to people in need of a little extra warmth. This is made possible by generous donations from local parishes, schools, community groups, and individuals. Hundreds of these coats are given away at the Coat Closet. Join Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of the Washington in their sixth annual Coats of Many Colors Coat Drive to do just that.
Each individual present will be allowed to take 2 coats.
In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. day of service, Catholic Charities DC today announced that it will host the first Catholic Charities Welcome Home Reentry Program 2019 Winter Symposium. The experiential event will help current and prospective volunteers to mentor and empathize with citizens re-entering the community after incarceration. Participants will learn about the barriers and risks to successful reentry so they gain a deeper understanding of those they mentor and provide tangible support to those rebuilding their lives after incarceration.
To better understand a returning citizen’s experience, participants will take part in a series of immersive activities including:
- Simulation EXperience of the first 30-days after release completing the key re-entry tasks: obtaining clothing, food and a government issued ID; securing housing and employment; reuniting with family; establishing a support network; keeping court mandated appointments; and maintaining hope
- Call to Action by people who have experienced and supported re-entry
- Packing Welcome Home Kits with practical items that make a big difference: hygiene items, underwear and outerwear, snacks, a metro card, and a personal note of encouragement to the recipient
- Volunteer Orientation for prospective Welcome Home Mentors
