Homelessness
You will find a melting pot of humanity at the Hermano Pedro day shelter in the Mt. Pleasant community of Washington D.C. Operating in modest basement quarters, Hermano Pedro, offers respite to the homeless and people on the edge of homelessness. During the day, we offer showers, laundry, clothing, breakfast and lunch on a “drop-in” basis. At night, we shelter 15 women, one of the few programs for homeless women in Washington, D.C. Our bi-lingual staff tackles just about everything imaginable, including medical first aid, mental health counseling, and social service triage.
Whatever the challenge, we open a single door to help and hope.
Our Philosophy
Homelessness is a complex and vexing social challenge. Each day, we tackle this challenge by reaffirming the fundamental human worth of every homeless person we meet. The homeless are working people struggling with the high cost of living in the nation’s capital. They are also people living with mental illness or a disability, and may also be struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction. Fundamentally, they are God’s children, and we offer compassion designed to help them move from dependence to independence.
We offer an array of supports, including clinical therapy, substance abuse counseling, job readiness instruction, parenting training, and adult education. Whether a bitterly cold night or steamy summer day, our homeless shelters provide safe lodging from the heavy burdens of life.
