The American Dental Association recently named the Spanish Catholic Center Dental Clinic one of this year's 2006 Community Dentistry Award winners. The Community Dentistry Award recognizes programs focused on improving oral health at the community level. Since 1972, the ADA Foundation has sponsored this award, recognizing no more than four clinics nationally each year. Under the leadership of Sister Janice Heisey, the dental clinic provides access to high-quality oral health education and direct care for more than 1,750 low-income, uninsured people from the immigrant, largely Hispanic, community each year. This program would not be possible without the tremendous volunteer support from more than 30 dentists. Several local foundations also contribute to our success: the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Consumer Health Foundation, the Dr. Daniel F. Lynch Memorial Fund, and the United Planning Organization.
